The bad reviews must be due to people using the plunger incorrectly (please read below). I've probably used it 100 times for the toilet (**** happens!) - successfully every time.
Here's how to use it CORRECTLY, and not have splashing in your face:
1. BEFORE you enter the water, KEEP THE PUMP EXTENDED to fill the cylinder with AIR. If you enter the water and extend afterward, you can suck water into the cylinder which is what you don't want to do.
2. Keeping it extended, put it in the water and cover the drain.
3. Go ahead and flush the clogged toilet...
4. Quickly grab the cylinder to hold steady - by the "P" of Plung-it (away from the moving rod that can pinch you... come on people). Also don't block the little air valve. Now give a few strong downward plunges while holding the cylinder steady.
It's really weird writing a review on a plunger, but it has saved the day many times :)
